HP Wi-Fi Direct Printing in the Enterprise

Have you been thinking that Wi-Fi Direct will mainly be limited to consumer applications? Think again. HP just announced support for Wireless Direct Printing, which allows any Wi-Fi capable device to print directly to the printer when in proximity without connecting through the corporate network.


This solution works by leveraging the Wi-Fi Direct standard that was developed last year by the Wi-Fi Alliance and the Apple AirPrint technology that eliminates software or driver installation on Apple mobile devices. The user simply needs to connect to the Wi-Fi network that the printer advertises, then print.

This should help simplify support for BYOD (bring your own device) initiatives. Since BYOD typically is also designed with security restrictions around corporate network access, and printers are usually distributed throughout the network, providing access to those printers would be a management headache to say the least.

Also, mobile device printing via Apple AirPrint on a corporate network is not usable at this point due to protocol limitations that prevent printer discovery and access across layer 3 network boundaries. The ability to connect directly to the printer and print documents will allow immediate adoption of AirPrint in the enterprise.

Cons: Unproven security


The security issues involved with a Wi-Fi network being advertised by a printer that is directly cabled into your network are significant. Printers have historically been easy targets for attackers to gain access to corporate networks due to their lack of focus on security. Just look here! By allowing direct wireless access to the printer, enterprises risk exploitation of numerous printer vulnerabilities which could result in broad internal network access for an attacker.

HP's implementation also appears to use an open Wi-Fi network, which makes the risk even greater! The Wi-Fi Direct faq states the use of a separate "security domain" from the corporate wireless network. What this means is that security of the Wi-Fi Direct connection can be different (and simpler) than security required to access the corporate network. But that doesn't require an open connection. Wi-Fi Direct supports strong WPA2 pre-shared key security and ease-of-setup using WPS. However, HP's documentation implies a wide-open wireless network.

Recommendation: Wait and see

I can't provide a solid recommendation on this technology or use in the enterprise until I learn more about HP's implementation. I have more questions than answers at this point. The prudent path for enterprises will be to wait and see what is discovered about this solution by the community over the coming weeks / months and engage your HP account team to learn more about the solution and security features.

Additionally, verify if the printers that your organization are purchasing support this technology, what the default settings are, and what controls can be put in place to prevent use of this feature until its use is appropriately secured and approved.

Wi-Fi Direct Devices Begin Hitting Consumer Market

It was only a matter of time, but Wi-Fi Direct capable equipment is now hitting the consumer market. According to In-Stat research, over 173 million devices are expected to ship with Wi-Fi Direct in 2011. The functionality is really enabled in software, so existing devices should be able to support Wi-Fi Direct with firmware or software upgrades, but manufacturer support with legacy devices may not be a priority. Expect to see this capability mainly built into newly developed products.

I wrote about the initial announcement back in January. As I said back then:
This is a smart play by the company to leverage the increasing utilization of "smart" mobile devices by consumers to allow photo enthusiasts to immediately transfer photos from a DSLR or professional camera to a phone, tablet, or other computing device. This means less effort and complexity for photographers in the field. For the professional, this could mean immediate review for correct composition without the time required to change cameras, unpack editing equipment, or potentially miss a great photo opportunity. For consumers use, this can mean immediate upload to social networks without having to wait  until returning home which could be beneficial during travel or vacations.

HP Wi-Fi Direct Mobile Mouse
Today, HP announced a Wi-Fi Direct capable mouse, eliminating the need to use Bluetooth or an external wireless dongle, instead using a workstation's built-in Wi-Fi receiver. HP claims first to market with this type of peripheral. The mouse should also feature twice the battery life of comparable Bluetooth models.

Revolution or Evolution? - Andrew's Take
Wi-Fi Direct will revolutionize information sharing among portable and fixed electronics. Expect to see many more announcements this year about Wi-Fi Direct products, including printers, gaming systems, workstations, laptops, tablets, and peripherals. I also wouldn't be surprised to see it pop into other consumer electronics like connected televisions, Blu-ray players, and streaming music systems.

As a Ford Sync owner, I would also be interested in seeing it included in a future firmware update. Currently, Sync pairs with portable electronics via Bluetooth for audio and data transfer, and Wi-Fi Direct would be logical extension of the system.

Wireless Tech Field Day - Day 2 Recap (HP, AirMagnet, Fluke)

Day 2 started out at the HP Executive Briefing Center (EBC). At HP we discussed the company's wireless product history, from Symbol OEM to Colubris acquisition in 2008. Today, the HP portfolio consists of wireless mobility controllers and APs. Rich and Chris presented the current network architecture, detailing central vs. distributed traffic forwarding, control and data plane implementation points, high availability options, and thin versus fat APs (which Greg @etherealmind calls 'Big Boner APs').

Discussion continued around access point hardware capabilities, focusing on the new MDM-460 and MDM-466 three spatial stream APs. Andres provided an iperf throughput demonstration to highlight the hardware is capable of up to 231 Mbps, which is a step above current two stream APs, but not earth shattering given the raw data rates up to 450 Mbps.

The HP visit wrapped up with a lengthy discussion on the future of wireless technology. The HP team solicited feedback on current wireless issues observed by the delegates. Topics included security architecture, mobile device support, personal devices, layer 1 RF complexity, and secure hotspots.

Delegates then headed over to Fluke offices for discussions with AirMagnet and Fluke Networks. AirMagnet was up first, and brought Bruce and Jesse in for a presentation of their product portfolio and demonstrations. The presentation covered AirMagnet solutions for wireless LAN planning, design, analysis, and troubleshooting.

In-depth demonstrations of Wi-Fi Analyzer Pro, Spectrum XT, and Site Survey Pro by Bruce allowed delegates to dive into technical features of the products. Since most delegates use these products on a regular basis, much of the discussion focused on product enhancements in the most recent versions, delegate feedback on pain points and desired features, and product roadmaps.

Jesse then presented the AirMagnet Enterprise WIPS/WIDS solution. Focus was placed on their capability for dynamic threat update protection, which is decoupled from the wireless infrastructure, allowing more regular updates without impacting wireless network operations. The ability to quickly respond to security threats is required in modern Wi-Fi networks, which are becoming mission-critical and carrying increasing amounts of sensitive cardholder and patient data. Additional solution benefits included extended channel scanning, forensics capabilities, and minimal WAN outage impact.

The final presentation was given by Carolyn and Paul from Fluke Networks. The presentation covered the Fluke AirCheck, a portable product designed for the 1st level field technician. Paul, a "real" engineer, walked us through the design process and an example use-case scenario. Although a bit dry, the points were spot-on. Additionally, access to an engineer of Paul's high calibre was reward enough, as the delegates were able to pick his brain on many technical details of the AirCheck. An amazing amount of thought and detail went into the product to implement complex functions in a simple and intuitive manner. For instance, AirCheck automatically detects the current country of operation using 802.11d, and offers a simple coloring of the current regulatory channels for the technician. The product is optimized for simple yet effective workflow,  drop resistance, fast power-on (2 seconds by my timing), high portability, and a long batter life (5 hours of constant use).

The Fluke team then allowed all the delegates to get hands-on time with an actual unit, bringing out 16 AirCheck units. Stephen fired up his portable 3G router and delegates were asked to find it. The AirCheck device finder function builds a line graph in real time and beeps similar to a geiger counter. It was amazingly easy to find the device, and quite fun. At first, I was skeptical that the product was too basic a tool for engineers. However, after having one in my hands, I was completely wrong. The tool has a place in any engineer's bag, and fills a gap for quick network analysis without booting a computer or using overly complex software.

Day 2 was full of great discussions and product demonstrations. The delegates were truly amazing, and it was great to be part of this event. I look forward to continuing to contribute to the strong wireless online community.
